The Gyrotonic System is an intelligent and elegant movement system created by Juliu Horvath, a former ballet dancer who rehabilitated himself from a severe achilles injury and spinal disc damage. The exercises were originally practiced as Yoga for Dancers, and over time evolved into the Gyrotonic Expansion System, accessible to people of all ages and abilities.
There are five machines specifically designed for this unique system of movement. The primary piece of equipment is made up of two parts: (1) A tower with an ingenious cable pulley system that provides you the ability to work with weight resistance in a fluid, continuous motion. (2) A bench which has two handles that move in a circular motion leading you into multiple ways of stretching your body and strengthening your core.
WHAT CAN GYROTONIC® EXERCISES DO FOR YOU?
Uniquely designed for the structure of our anatomy, Gyrotonic exercises provide a healthy way to strengthen and coordinate muscles. These movements also inherently reduce tightness and increase flexibility. Altogether, this can lead to better posture and alignment and more ease in your daily activities. Myriad exercises can provide you a full body workout, or a select few can be chosen to address a specific issue.
What happens in your Gyrotonic sessions depends on what you are looking for and what your body needs. I have worked with people recovering from injury, pre-natal and post-partum women, and people who are simply looking for more fitness in their lives. My clientele has spanned from teenagers to senior citizens.
WHAT MAKES GYROTONIC® EXERCISES UNIQUE?
• The exercises often have a curving or spiraling action, following the shape of your bones, joints and muscles. It is truly designed for your anatomy.
• The fluidity and continuous motion of the exercises will encourage your tight muscular and connective tissue to relax. This will improve your alignment, allow for proper coordination of your muscles and lessen physical strain throughout your body.
• A Gyrotonic session combines movement, breath and energetic work, giving you a workout from the inside out.

where do you teach gyro? i am a huge fan of juliu’s work as well as feldenkrais and continuum
Hello Elizabeth,
I teach on the Upper East Side on Lexington between 90th and 91st on Tuesday and Thursday mornings, and on Broadway between Houston and Prince Tuesday afternoons and evenings, and Fridays and Saturday afternoon. I have other times available downtown as well. I am also employed at Soho Sanctuary.
I don’t run into many people who know Continuum, so that is a pleasant surprise.
If you have any more questions or would like to book a session, please e-mail me at info@meganbrians.com or call me at 917.293.0714.
